Fire protection services in Marlborough began in 1849, when three separate volunteer fire companies established. In 1855, Reverend Sylvester Bucklin was able to get members of the three companies to set aside their differences and join together as one as the Marlborough Fire Department. The Town of Marlborough became the City of Marlborough, additional companies were formed within the department and the first paid firefighters were hired to tend to the horses and the equipment. The volunteers eventually became paid on call firefighters. The city grew the need to hire more firefighters was evident.
In 1967, the paid professional firefighters of Marlborough sought union representation to improve wages and benefits, working conditions and safety. They approached the International Association of Firefighters in August 1967, a charter was granted to the new local on August 28,1967,and was named Marlborough Firefighters Local 1714 with twenty-four charter members.
Today, with over seventy members of Local 1714, we provide Fire, Emergency Medical Services, Technical Rescue, Hazardous Materials Protection and Fire Prevention to the citizens of Marlborough. This service is provided from three stations staffing three engine companies, two ladder companies and a rescue company. Members respond to over five thousand calls for service per year.
